UNIGIS International board meeting in Salzburg

UNIGIS is the largest international university network with the aim of offering practice-oriented postgraduate programs in Geographic Information Systems as distance learning courses over the internet. Currently, UNIGIS provides study programs in German, English, Portuguese, Spanish, and Hungarian.

From November 7th to 9th, the directors of the partner universities in the global UNIGIS network gathered in Salzburg to collectively strategise the future of their international collaboration.

PLUS Graduation Ceremony – Visits from Croatia & Slovenia!

On November 13th, we were delighted to welcome the first two graduates of the UNIGIS MSc program from Croatia and Slovenia to the official graduation ceremony at PLUS! During the ceremony, the new rector of PLUS, Univ.-Prof. Dr. Bernhard Fügenschuh, presented graduation certificates to Urška Kušar and Eldar Ibrahimović, alongside a group of 120 other PLUS alumni.

Following the official ceremony, we had the pleasure of showing both UNIGIS alumni around the UNIGIS office. Together with Dr. Ivan Tomljenovic, the lecturer of the optional module "LiDAR in theory and application", we raised our glasses in celebration of Urška's and Eldar's remarkable achievements!

Congratulations to both UNIGIS alumni, and best wishes for a bright future with GIS!

ForoMundoUNIGIS 2024

The 2024 edition of ForoMundoUNIGIS, themed "Geospatial Innovation: Transforming Territories for a Connected World", brought together researchers, GIS practitioners, students, and alumni from the Latin American UNIGIS community to discuss the latest trends and success stories in the application of GI-technologies across Latin America.

During the event, this year’s winner of the UNIGIS América Latina Master Thesis Award Franklin Molinas ("Estimation of the sedimentation rate in the Itaipu reservoir - Paraguay, Brazil - using multibeam bathymetry") as well as the winners of the UNIGIS América Latina Academic Excellence Prize Alejandra Benavides ("Spatial Data Collection on Natural Hazard Exposure in Heritage Buildings, Guaranda, Ecuador") and Ismael Hernández ("Wildfire Risk Model in Mineral del Monte, Hidalgo, México") were announced.

Congratulations to the winners, and we look forward to seeing you at ForoMundo 2025!

Karl Atzmanstorfer appointed as UNIGIS Director of Studies

In September, Dr. Karl Atzmanstorfer was appointed as the new Director of Studies for the English-language UNIGIS programs at Paris Lodron University Salzburg. Karl has worked for UNIGIS Salzburg in several roles since 2008, starting as tutor and faculty in the German-language UNIGIS MSc program, before he moved on to coordinate the UNIGIS programs in Latin America. While he will be still involved with UNIGIS Latin America, we are happy that Karl agreed to take on the lead for the UNIGIS Salzburg “global campus” programs that deliver Geoinformatics distance-learning education to GI-professionals to all around the world.

The UNIGIS Team wishes you all the best for the holiday season and 2025!
