UNIGIS Master of Science UNIGIS professional Registration open until February 10
Are you looking to expand your GIS expertise but cannot visit a university on-site? Then, the UNIGIS distance learning programs at the University of Salzburg are perfect for you! The UNIGIS MSc and UNIGIS Professional programs are designed as fully-online academic excellence programs delivered to a worldwide community of GI-professionals. Registration remains open until February 10, 2025, and courses commencing on March 1, 2025. The welcome workshop, where you will get to know your student peers and the UNIGIS team personally, will be held online on February 28 and February 29.
Starting on February 10th for the first group of students, this new Optional Module of UNIGIS Salzburg introduces to the exciting world of spatial data science! Developed and taught by Ing. Christoph Schranz the Human Motion Analytics Division at SalzburgResearch, the module covers foundational topics in stochastics and descriptive statistics, advancing to inferential statistics, machine learning, and neural networks. Like all other optional modules in the UNIGIS program, the Spatial Data Science module is offered three times a year and can be selected as an elective subject in both the UNIGIS MSc and Professional programs.
We are very pleased to introduce Dr. Mona Bartling as the new lecturer for the module Visualisation & Cartography in our UNIGIS MSc and UNIGIS Professional programs! She takes over from Dr. Caroline Atzl - many thanks to her for her excellent support of this module for many years! Mona Bartling holds a PhD in Applied Geoinformatics from the University of Salzburg. As an expert in mobile cartography, geovisualisation, and human-computer interaction (HCI), Mona’s research focuses on how diverse visualisation methods for geographic data enable users to meaningfully interpret and use maps for their specific purposes. Our students will greatly benefit from Mona’s expertise as they embark on their journey into the exciting world of cartography! Welcome Mona!

A special honor to Prof. Dr. Josef Strobl and 20 years UNIGIS Kraków
On November 22nd, the founder of UNIGIS Salzburg, Professor Dr. Josef Strobl was awarded the prestigious Merentibus Medal by the Jagiellonian University Kraków, Poland. This distinguished honor, conferred by the University Senate, recognises individuals and organisations for their outstanding long-term contributions to the Jagiellonian University. The award ceremony also provided a wonderful opportunity to celebrate 20 years of UNIGIS Kraków. Congratulations to our UNIGIS colleagues in Poland, and best wishes for at least another 20 successful years! 😉

A big congratulations from the entire UNIGIS Salzburg team to UNIGIS MSc alumnus Michael Faden, who has been honored with the award for the Best Swiss UNIGIS Master Thesis! 🏆 His thesis, "The Delayed Coupling Effects of Satellite-based Climate Indicators on Malaria Cases in North Kivu, Democratic Republic of the Congo", was presented and celebrated during the GeoBeer Switzerland event.
