A visit as high as Mount Everest

Exactly six years ago, our esteemed UNIGIS graduate Khim Lal Gautam set out to remeasure the tallest mountain in the world. Last week, we listened to his adventures and insights on the actual surveying right here at the UNIGIS Salzburg café. He paid us a visit, and it was a great pleasure for us to meet him in person. Thank you for the lovely time! Read more about the first Nepali surveyor on top of Mount Everest Khim Lal Gautam.

Would you like to translate his book “Pandhrau Chuli” into another language? Would you like to get in contact with him at the International Mountain Conference in Innsbruck, where he will speak about environmental issues at Mount Everest Basecamp? Let us know!

UNIGIS Retreat 2025

As every year in spring, the UNIGIS Team Salzburg gathered for a two-day retreat to rethink how we teach GIS for an ever-growing community of GIS practitioners around the world.

We took two full days to thoroughly reflect on our study materials, teaching strategies, internal policies, and procedures. A key focus of this year’s UNIGIS retreat was how to best teach the rapidly evolving field of GeoAI to our UNIGIS community. Over the coming months, we will steadily integrate the outcomes of the retreat into our academic processes and study materials.

Sentinel-2 Time Series Data and Machine Learning Techniques for Sugar Cane Mapping in the Usuthu River Basin, Eswatini

Accurate mapping of sugarcane fields is vital for effective agricultural management, particularly in Eswatini, where sugarcane plays a significant role in the economy. Traditional methods for mapping sugarcane fields, such as ground surveys and the use of orthophotos, are often expensive and difficult to implement in remote areas. To address these challenges, this study explores the use of Sentinel-2 (S2) satellite imagery and machine learning techniques, specifically Support Vector Machine (SVM) and Random Forest (RF), for classifying sugarcane fields.

GetTogether: AGIT is back
One month to go!

On 2nd and 3rd July 2025, the Department of Geoinformatics – Z_GIS will once again open its doors for the AGIT – one of the leading geoinformatics conferences in Central Europe for over 30 years.

We are pleased to invite our UNIGIS students, lecturers and alumni to our GetTogether. This joint lunch break is a perfect opportunity for direct dialogue over food and drink. When? Wednesday, 2nd July 2025 at 12 noon.

By the way: UNIGIS students and alumni can attend the AGIT at a reduced group rate. Simply enter ‘UNIGIS’ in the comments field when registering.

Do you have more or special questions about the UNIGIS programs?

We will be happy to answer them in a personal meeting. Make an appointment for a non-binding online consultation if you are not sure which degree program best suits your requirements, needs and goals.

If none of the offered dates are possible for you, we will be happy to answer your questions by e-mail or telephone (+43 / 662 / 8044 - 7522).

Congratulations to our latest graduates!

"The UNIGIS Salzburg Professional course was a transformative experience for me that deepened my expertise in ArcGIS Pro, QGIS and introduced me to the new world of programming in Python, Java and etc... I developed strong skills in geospatial analysis and LiDAR, learned to critically evaluate maps (not easy!), and learnt about efficient visualization techniques. The basics of programming became a standout moment for me during the course—something completely new to me—supported by many tutorials and peer-colleagues collaboration. I now apply these skills professionally and as a hobby. I highly recommend this course to GIS enthusiasts and anyone passionate about mapping or geography." (Ewelina Czwienczek, UNIGIS professional Intake March 2024)

Congratulations from the UNIGIS Team go to: Ewelina Czwienczek, Ramona Allemann, Tobias Bangert, Pranay Maharjan, Tomas Tintor, Daniel Walsh, Nesit Abedje, Sandra Bajlo, Francisco Cabanas Martinez, Thomas Christensen, Zacchaeus Ndirima, Pia Ferner, Iva Rajkovic, Justin Perry

Best regards from the UNIGIS Salzburg Team
