UNIGIS Master Thesis

Michael Demarmels works in the urban water management department at Infragon Ingenieure AG, Switzerland. In February 2026, he completed his UNIGIS MSc degree with distinction, presenting his practice-oriented Master Thesis 'Using Network Topology for Data Management: A Case Study from Urban Drainage' that focusses on improving the company’s data models. A special emphasis was put on the question of how to deal with inconsistencies in the underlying network topology during these attribute assignments. If you would like to find out more about his life as a UNIGIS student, have a look at his article in the latest issue of our magazine OFFLINE. Great work Michael!

Welcome Jan Oliver!

We are very pleased to introduce Dr. Jan Oliver Wallgrün, who is joining the UNIGIS team as the new lecturer for the module Basics of Application Development in our UNIGIS MSc and UNIGIS Professional programs! Jan Oliver was a long-time Postdoctoral Research Scholar at Penn State University and is now an independent researcher and instructor in GIS/GIScience, Spatial Data Science, and Immersive Technologies. In his module, he will introduce our UNIGIS students to the exciting world of software engineering and scripting of geospatial applications.

Jan Oliver succeeds Thomas Zuberbühler, who has accompanied our students as the lecturer of this important module for several years. Many thanks, Thomas – and welcome aboard, Jan Oliver!

Intergeo Conference
- free EXPO tickets -

This year’s INTERGEO will take place in Munich from September 15–17, 2026. As it is so close to Salzburg every member of the UNIGIS team will be present at our booth at least some hours, and we would be happy seeing you there as well (Hall C5 Campus Geoinnovation).

INTERGEO is the world’s most important trade fair for geospatial solutions, geodata and cutting-edge technologies in surveying, GIS, BIM, drones, smart cities and digital transformation.
We can offer you a free 3-day ticket for the Intergeo-Expo! Send an email to UNIGIS.office@plus.ac.at if you are interested.

UNIGIS Retreat 2026

"What do our students really need to know when it comes to using geoAI in their everyday tasks as GIS professionals?" This was the guiding question of this year's UNIGIS retreat, taking place on May 8 and 9, when the UNIGIS Team Salzburg gathered to reflect on and discuss the latest developments in the field of geoAI and the challenge of orienting our students on what they really need to know in this rapidly changing technological environment.

The process of integrating concepts, tools, and applications of geoAI into our study materials - started at last year's retreat of the UNIGIS team - will continue and be deepened over the coming months. We are looking forward to it!

Congratulations to our latest graduates!

Three cheers from the UNIGIS team to:
Michael Demarmels, Tara Behnsen, Cristo van der Werff, Mandeep Maharjan, Michael Scheen, Timon Vrtarić and Osamah Salem Basowaidan

"Thank you a lot for your help during this study!    I think it was a very nice thought out and set up learning program."

We hope to meet our Masters at the graduation ceremony in Salzburg soon!

Greetings from the UNIGIS Salzburg Team!
